Traditional preparations of Plenckia populnea are recorded in several Brazilian monographs and glossaries. Among rural communities in Minas Gerais, especially in the Vale do Jequitinhonha, infusions or decoctions of the trunk bark have been taken as a bitter tonic and to ease fevers associated with malaria (Franco & Fontoura, 2004; Rizzini & Mors, 1995). Historical pharmacopoeias also note the bark infusion for similar purposes, a use that persists in regional herbal practice as a simple febrifuge and digestive tonic (Peckolt & Peckolt, 1910). In the dry Caatinga belt of northeastern Brazil the same bark infusion is used as a stomachic, taken in small doses after meals (Barkley, 2005). Across these communities the preparation is consistently gentle and brief, distinguishing it from stronger purgative or emetic remedies.

For a simple bark tea, measure about 10 g of chopped fresh (or 5–6 g dried) trunk bark. Add it to 500 mL of cold water, bring to a gentle simmer for 10 minutes, then cool and strain. Drink 200–250 mL once or twice daily for fevers or as a mild tonic; do not exceed a few days of continuous use without a practitioner’s guidance. Raw bark contains tannins and saponins that may irritate the stomach, and one historic source advises avoiding overlong infusion because of potential laxative effects (Peckolt & Peckolt, 1910). Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without medical advice.

Well-documented secondary metabolites in Plenckia populnea include tannins, flavonoids such as quercetin derivatives, and a range of sterols (frank seconds and hop-22(29)-ene variants among others) (Ferreira et al., 1994; Tursch et al., 1966). These classes can plausibly contribute to the astringent and bitter profile that underlies its use as a digestive and febrifuge, though they do not imply antimalarial activity on their own.

Today, small-scale rural commerce in powdered bark and pre-cut pieces continues, and some seed collections list Plenckia populnea for its phytochemistry rather than direct herbal application (Ferreira et al., 1994). The bark remains the part of choice for infusions, with preparation notes and cautions echoing long-standing local practice (Franco & Fontoura, 2004; Rizzini & Mors, 1995).

It is a dense, durable hardwood valued in some regions for heavy construction, railway sleepers, and general carpentry. No documented fiber, non-timber product, craft, or industrial applications beyond solid wood use have been verified in reliable references.
