Fleshy, pith-rich stems of Alluaudia humbertii are harvested locally for rustic construction (posts, framing, fencing) and simple crafts (walking sticks, decorative elements in floral arrangements) (Mollion, 1990; IPNI). The stems provide a light-to-moderate weight wood that is easy to split and shape for nonstructural applications, though they are not suited to permanent load-bearing or high-moisture exposure without treatment.
Industrial and craft applications:
Stems are processed into raw craft materials (fence posts, small poles, turned items) and as structural elements in traditional shade structures and rudimentary greenhouses in dry southwestern Madagascar (Mollion, 1990; MOYST, 2006). The pith facilitates carving and shaping, while the cortex yields a coarse bast fiber that can be twisted into cords for binding (Mollion, 1990).
Properties relevant to use:
High stem succulence and a large pith-to-wood ratio yield low-density, readily workable material suitable for light-duty, short-lived structures in arid climates. The sap is latex-rich; the bast fiber is coarse and durable for binding but not for fine textiles (Mollion, 1990).
Sustainability and sourcing:
Alluaudia humbertii is endemic to southwestern Madagascar, where arid-zone vegetation is under pressure from grazing, charcoal, and land-use change (IUCN SSC, 1998–2020; CITES). Wild harvesting for craft wood is common, but populations are localized and recruitment slow; uncontrolled extraction can lead to local depletion. National forestry policy provides for permits and seasonal restrictions in some areas, although enforcement capacity varies (MOYST, 2006).
