Ethnobotanical Uses

Across large parts of tropical South and West Asia, leaves and young pods of Cleome viscosa L. are eaten as a cooked vegetable (Sinha, 1992; Dutta, 2012). In West Africa, women in Burkina Faso reportedly crush fresh leaves and apply them as a poultice for head and body aches, while seeds are made into a condiment or bitter infusion (Université des Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc, 1982). In eastern India and Bangladesh, leaf poultices are applied for rheumatic pain, and crushed leaf infusions are drunk for intestinal worms (Chakraborty & Ghosh, 2013; Kundu & Ahamed, 2012). In the Philippines, decoctions of the aerial parts have been used for malaria (Ayensu, 1992). These records point to a broad tradition of topical compresses and bitter internal remedies prepared from leaves or aerial parts in West Africa and South/Southeast Asia.

Traditional uses often involve simple infusions or decoctions. A common bitter tea is made by crushing fresh leaves and pouring hot water over them, then infusing for 10–15 minutes and drinking up to a cup a few times a day for malaria or fevers (Ayensu, 1992). For topical use, freshly washed leaves are pounded to a mash and applied to painful joints or skin sores for 20–30 minutes, reapplying as needed (Chakraborty & Ghosh, 2013; Université des Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc, 1982).

One practical preparation follows: to make a mild leaf infusion, use about 10 grams of fresh leaves (or 2–3 grams dried), crush briefly, add to a cup of near‑boiling water, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Drink a single cup daily for short periods and avoid in pregnancy (Abdel‑Aal et al., 2013; Adeyemi et al., 2007). The bitterness suggests potent constituents; excess or prolonged use is not advised, and topical applications may be irritating in sensitive individuals.

Well‑established compounds in Cleome viscosa leaves—glycosylated flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, along with phenolic acids and the methoxy‑hydroxyflavone apigenin—support the plant’s traditional use as a bitter tonic and antipyretic (Kumar et al., 2009; Perumal et al., 2014). Today, the species remains locally foraged and eaten as a cooked vegetable and bitter tonic in parts of South and West Asia and West Africa, while researchers continue to investigate its antimicrobial and anti‑inflammatory potential.
