Eutrochium purpureum, also known as purple Joe-Pye weed or sweetscented joe pye weed, is a perennial plant native to eastern and central North America. It grows up to 1.5-2.4 meters tall and has purple stems with whorls of leaves. The flowers, which bloom in mid to late summer, attract insects that feed on their nectar. This plant shows a high amount of variability and has three recognized varieties. It is also known to hybridize with other species of Eutrochium. Many species of butterflies, moths, bees, and flies visit the flowers, and it serves as a host to several moth species. Eutrochium purpureum is sometimes cultivated and has been found in parts of New Zealand where it has escaped from cultivation.
