Camassia leichtlinii, also known as the great camas or large camas, is a flowering plant found in western North America. It grows from a bulb and can reach heights of 24-48 inches. Its long, narrow leaves stem from a basal rosette and its inflorescence is a spike-like cluster held above the leaves. While it may be mistaken for the more common Camassia quamash, it has a different range. This plant requires consistent moisture in the spring but can withstand seasonal drought after its seed pods mature. Camas stands can benefit from seasonal fires as they aid in regeneration and reduce competition from other plants. The bulbs of this plant are edible, but must be cooked for a long time to be safe to eat. It is important to not confuse this species with the deadly meadow death-camas.
