Amaryllis belladonna, also known as the Jersey lily, is a plant species native to South Africa but widely cultivated as an ornamental. It has been naturalized in many places around the world, including parts of Europe, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. This perennial bulbous geophyte produces fragrant pink flowers on a leafless stem in late summer, before its narrow strap-shaped leaves appear. The plant is pollinated by hawk moths and carpenter bees, and its seeds are dispersed through wind dispersal. All parts of the plant are toxic to humans and animals, containing alkaloids that can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Amaryllis bulbs are easy to cultivate and require little watering, making them drought tolerant. They have also been found to have medicinal properties, with compounds that can fight against malaria.
