Genus Ravenea in Family Arecaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Ravenea is a palm genus in Arecaceae with about 14 species, centered in Madagascar with a few taxa extending to the Comoros. The type species is Ravenea robusta (H. Wendl. ex C.D. Bouché). Most species are solitary, medium-sized to large trees with smooth, columnar trunks and crowns of regularly pinnate leaves bearing entire, reduplicate leaflets; juveniles commonly show conspicuous, dark-colored, banded trunks. Infloresences are borne below (sometimes among) the leaves, with unisexual flowers on separate plants; they are solitary or in groups, with tubular to funnel-shaped perianths and 6–30 stamens depending on flower sex; fruits are typically single-seeded drupes with smooth exocarp. Intrafloral nectaries are present in female flowers (Dransfield et al., 2008).
The genus attains greatest richness and local endemism in eastern and central Madagascar’s humid forests, often on laterite or limestone, with several species confined to rocky outcrops or seasonally dry forest and a few occurring in the Comoros (Dransfield et al., 2008; Baker & Loo, 2004). Pollination appears largely entomophilous, with insects attracted by nectar and scent (Dransfield et al., 2008); fruit dispersal is poorly documented but likely involves birds or mammals in some species. A base chromosome number x=16 is widely assumed for palms, including Ravenea, though explicit counts remain uncommon in the primary literature (Baker et al., 2011).
Taxonomically, Ravenea is included in tribe Caryoteae within subfamily Coryphoideae in modern treatments, distinct from the formerly broader “Coccothrincae” concept (Baker et al., 2011). The genus has not been formally divided below rank. Ongoing revisions based on herbarium and fieldwork, alongside molecular studies, continue to stabilize species limits; Baker (2015) reports about 14 accepted species, fewer than historical treatments that sometimes listed up to 19 (Rakotoarinivo et al., 2013). While the core set of species is clear, subtle morphological variation and scattered type material complicate delimitation in some complexes, warranting careful application of recent monographic work (Dransfield et al., 2008; Baker & Loo, 2004).
Several species are widely cultivated ornamentals, notably R. rivularis and R. lapha, for their graceful, dark trunks and feathery canopies (Dransfield et al., 2008). Some are offered in specialty horticulture, while others remain rare in cultivation. No Ravenea species are significant timber, food, or medicinal crops. Given pronounced narrow endemism and habitat specificity, several taxa are considered threatened by forest loss and collection pressure; better mapping of distributions and population monitoring are needed (Rakotoarinivo et al., 2013). Continued integrative revision and conservation prioritization will be essential for safeguarding remaining wild populations (Baker, 2015; Dransfield et al., 2008).
