Ravenea musicalis, also known as the river palm, is a unique species of flowering plant that is the only truly aquatic palm tree. It is endemic to Madagascar and was first discovered in 1993. The tree is known for its submerged trunk and its ability to germinate and grow underwater. It is primarily harvested by local people for building materials and food, and is also prized by horticulturists for its rarity and unique life history. However, over-harvesting, habitat degradation, and habitat loss threaten the remaining populations. R. musicalis is listed as "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN, but recent surveys have found additional populations, leading to a recommendation for a "Vulnerable" status. The tree's habitat is also threatened by land conversion for agriculture and the effects of climate change, which could lead to a decline in the population.
