Industrial and craft applications:
Oenanthe aquatica is employed in engineered constructed‑wetland systems for tertiary treatment of municipal and agricultural wastewater. Published pilot‑scale studies report that the emergent shoots and roots of the species achieve substantial nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy‑metal removal, making it a functional component of floating treatment wetlands, vertical‑flow cells and subsurface‑flow wetlands. Its harvested biomass is sometimes evaluated as a substrate for composting or as a low‑cost feedstock for anaerobic digestion, although such uses remain experimental and not yet commercialized.

Properties relevant to use:
The plant’s utility derives from its high growth rate under fluctuating water levels, a dense aerial and root biomass, and a demonstrated capacity for nutrient uptake and metal sequestration. Studies have quantified nitrogen removal efficiencies exceeding 2 g m⁻² day⁻¹ in pilot reactors, and the species shows accumulation of copper, zinc and cadmium in both shoots and roots, indicating phytostabilisation potential. Its tolerance of anaerobiosis and ability to thrive in low‑fertility substrates support repeated harvest cycles.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Oenanthe aquatica is widespread across temperate Europe and Asia, occurring in marshes, ditches and slow‑moving waterways. It is not listed as threatened in major regional Red‑Data assessments and can be sustainably harvested from natural wetlands when collection is regulated to avoid habitat degradation. In recent years, it has also been cultivated in purpose‑built ponds and integrated aquaponic systems, providing a controlled supply that reduces pressure on wild populations. Because the species can spread vegetatively, careful management is required in non‑native regions to prevent invasion.
