Hydrocharis morsus-ranae, also known as frogbit, is a flowering plant that belongs to the Hydrocharis genus in the Hydrocharitaceae family. In North America, it is commonly referred to as common frogbit or European frog's-bit to distinguish it from a similar plant called American frogbit. Frogbit is a small floating plant that resembles a water lily and has white, three-petalled flowers. Its leaves are kidney-shaped and grow in rosettes on the water surface, with its roots hanging down into the water but not touching the bottom. This plant is fast-growing and spreads quickly through stolons, and survives the winter as dormant turions that rise to the surface in the spring. While native to Europe and parts of Asia, frogbit was introduced to Canada in the 1930s and has become invasive in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, particularly around the Great Lakes. It is considered a pest in this region as it can take over waterways and form dense masses of vegetation, threatening native biodiversity. However, in its native areas, frogbit is not typically dominant.
