Juniperus virginiana, also known as eastern redcedar, is a species of coniferous evergreen tree native to eastern North America. It is commonly found from southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and east of the Great Plains. The tree is slow-growing and can reach heights of 5-20 meters, with a short trunk and reddish-brown fibrous bark. It has two types of leaves, sharp needle-like juvenile leaves and scale-like adult leaves. The tree produces small berry-like cones that are an important food source for birds. Eastern juniper is a pioneer species, often found in prairies or old pastures, and is able to live for over 900 years. It is considered an invasive species in many areas and is being actively removed through cutting and prescribed burning. The wood of the tree is highly valued for its durability and is used for fence posts, furniture, and even pencils. The smoke of burning eastern juniper is believed to have spiritual cleansing properties in some Native American cultures. The tree is also used for windbreaks and as a Christmas tree in some regions. It is the most widely used wood for making blocks for recorders due to its unique properties.
