Podocarpus totara, also known as tōtara, is a species of podocarp tree native to New Zealand. It can be found throughout the North Island and northeastern South Island in lowland, montane, and lower subalpine forests. Tōtara is commonly found in areas with fertile and well-drained soil. It is a slow-growing tree that can reach heights of up to 35 meters and is known for its longevity and thick trunk. The bark of the tree peels off in papery flakes and the leaves are sharp and needle-like. Tōtara produces unique cones with fleshy, berry-like scales that turn bright red when mature. The largest known living tōtara, the Pouakani Tree, is over 35 meters tall and nearly 4 meters in trunk diameter. Tōtara is often found regenerating on farmland as it is not eaten by livestock. There are two varieties of tōtara, and it is closely related to a species from South America. Tōtara is easy to grow from seed and cuttings and has been planted in the United Kingdom. It has several cultivars for garden use and its wood is highly valued for its durability and carving properties.
