Araucaria columnaris, also known as the coral reef araucaria, Cook pine, or New Caledonia pine, is a coniferous tree found in the Melanesia region of the Pacific, specifically in New Caledonia. It was first identified by botanist Johann Reinhold Forster during Captain James Cook's voyage around the world. The tree can grow up to 60 meters tall and has a slender, spire-like crown. Its bark peels off in thin sheets and its branches are lined with cord-like, horizontal branchlets. The tree produces scaly, egg-shaped female seed cones and smaller, foxtail-shaped male pollen cones. A recent study found that the tree tends to lean in a specific direction depending on its location in the northern or southern hemisphere. It is often grown as an ornamental tree in various parts of the world, including Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and India.
