Sphagnum magellanicum, also known as Magellanic bogmoss, is a widespread species of moss found in wet boreal forests in South America, North America, and Eurasia. It is easily recognizable by its distinctive red-purple color and forms low cushions and mats in freshwater bogs. However, in recent years, there has been concern over the large-scale harvesting of Sphagnum peat in Chile for export to other countries, which could potentially threaten the water supply in the region. To regulate this, Chilean law now only allows for manual extraction of Sphagnum using specific tools and requires a certain percentage of the moss to be left unharvested. In Iceland, the species is considered vulnerable and in a study on the effects of herbicide exposure, Sphagnum magellanicum was found to have intermediate sensitivity.
