Ceratodon purpureus, also known as fire moss, is a small, dioicous moss found worldwide in a variety of habitats, from urban areas to Antarctica. It is a short moss with erect stems and hairlike leaves that can range in color from green to ginger. Fire moss is able to tolerate high levels of pollution and is commonly found in disturbed areas such as roadsides and mine tailings. It reproduces through spores and vegetatively through protonemata. A 2012 study found that fire moss has a plant-pollinator relationship with springtails, which enhances its fertilization. Fire moss is a pioneer species and often the first to colonize burned areas. It is typically replaced by flowering plants in later stages of succession.
