Roscoea purpurea is a perennial herbaceous plant that is native to the Himalayas, particularly Nepal. It is a member of the ginger family and is unique in that it can grow in colder mountainous regions. The plant has a short vertical rhizome and produces "pseudostems" from tightly wrapped leaf bases. It can grow up to 50 cm tall and has wide leaves with pale green or reddish-purple sheaths. The flowers are the largest of any species in the genus and are usually purple or mauve, but can also be white or red. Roscoea purpurea is pollinated by the long tongue fly and is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant in gardens. It has been found to be hardy and has received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society for its cultivars, including 'Dalai Lama', 'Helen Lamb', and 'Red Neck'.
