Common products:
Ornamental climbing vine sold by nurseries for landscaping, green walls, fences, and trellises. Whole plant, vines, and rooted cuttings are the marketed forms. Popular cultivars include ‘Star Showers’, ‘Engelmannii’, and ‘Silver Lining’, selected for variegated foliage, rapid coverage, and shade tolerance.

Industrial and craft applications:
Soil erosion control: vegetated mats and slope stabilization on embankments, highways, and restoration sites. Roots and stems form dense networks that reduce surface runoff. (plant parts: living root system, stems, foliage)
Green roof and living wall systems: provides vegetative cover, improves thermal performance, and offers microhabitat for invertebrates. (plant parts: roots, stems, leaves)
Habitat creation: supports pollinators and birds in restoration projects. (plant parts: foliage, fruits, stems)

Properties relevant to use:
Vigorous twining growth with nodal adventitious roots that develop adhesive root pads (discs) on the stem; these pads secrete mucilaginous polysaccharides and phenolic compounds, enabling attachment to vertical surfaces without external support and supporting tensile forces up to several Newtons per pad. Tolerates a wide range of light conditions from full sun to deep shade, moderate drought after establishment, and varied soil textures (sandy loam to clay), facilitating use in diverse urban and rural settings. High leaf area index (up to 5–6) and rapid canopy closure (up to 2 m per season) contribute to shading, heat island mitigation, and soil stabilization. The adhesive mechanism has been studied for bioinspired materials (e.g., synthetic adhesives mimicking the root pad’s microstructure) (references: J. Plant Res. 2015; J. Exp. Bot. 2018).

Sustainability and sourcing:
Native to eastern and central North America; listed by the USDA NRCS as a recommended native plant for erosion control and landscaping; not listed as a noxious weed in U.S. or Canadian plant regulations. Commercial supply sourced from regional nurseries that propagate by cuttings or seed, ensuring genetic fidelity and avoiding wild harvesting. Low water requirements after establishment; can be maintained with minimal irrigation, supporting sustainable landscaping. Propagation methods (seed, semi‑hardwood cuttings) align with the USDA Plant Materials Program guidelines for native plant restoration.
