Solanum umbelliferum, also known as bluewitch nightshade, is a small perennial herb or subshrub found in California, Baja California, and Arizona. It grows in chaparral and oak woodland habitats and can reach up to one meter in height. The plant has dark gray-green leaves and produces bright purple or blue flowers with yellow anthers. Its flowers close into spherical buds overnight and it bears small green fruits that turn purple when ripe. S. umbelliferum is able to thrive in rocky and clay soils and can often be found in areas recovering from wildfires or other disturbances. However, like other members of the Solanum genus, it contains toxic alkaloids.
