Solanum sessiliflorum, also known as cocona, is a tropical shrub in the Solanaceae family. It has sturdy branches and large, serrated, and hairy leaves. Cocona is similar to other plants in its family, such as naranjilla and pseudolulo, but can be distinguished by its lack of spines and purple coloring. It can hybridize with these and other relatives. The plant produces red, orange, or yellow edible berries and is native to the Andean region of South America. It is commonly grown for consumption in parts of South America, particularly in the Amazon rainforest. Cocona can also be grown as an indoor ornamental plant in temperate climates, but is sensitive to spider mites and should not be kept in dry air during winter. It is also susceptible to aphids and nematodes. Cocona can survive cool weather but will be damaged by frost. It can bear fruit in as little as 9 months or as long as 24 when grown from seed. Some related species, such as Solanum georgicum and Solanum hyporhodium, were previously considered part of cocona, but are now recognized as distinct plants.
