Solanum rostratum, also known as buffalobur nightshade, is a species of nightshade native to the United States and northern and central Mexico. It is an annual herb with spiny stems and leaves, reaching up to 1.5 meters in height. Its yellow flowers are pollinated by medium to large bees and exhibit a unique feature called heteranthery, where they have two sets of anthers of unequal size and function. The fruit is a berry enclosed in a prickly calyx, and the seeds are released when the berries dry and split apart. This plant was of interest to biologist Charles Darwin, who ordered seeds to study its heteranthery just before his death. It is also the ancestral host plant of the Colorado potato beetle, but this pest has since adopted the potato as its primary host.
