Solanum pachyandrum, also known as bombona, is a spine-forming vine native to southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru. Its large, juicy fruit is a popular treat among children in the region. The plant was first scientifically published in 1914 by German botanist Friedrich August Georg Bitter. It is part of the Solanum genus, which contains over 1,000 species. Bombona is characterized by its prickly pedicels and non-tapering anthers. It belongs to the Solanum section Aculeigerum, which includes eight species found in Mexico, Central America, Ecuador, and Peru. S. pachyandrum is distinguished from other species by its white flowers and wider anthers.
