They are also used in fruit salads, smoothies, and desserts. In South America, they are often used in jams and preserves. In New Zealand, they are sometimes used in chutneys. In addition, the leaves and stems of the plant can be used to make herbal tea.
Solanum muricatum, also known as pepino dulce or sweet cucumber, is a species of evergreen shrub native to South America. It is grown for its sweet, edible fruit which resembles a melon in color and has a flavor similar to a mix of honeydew and cucumber. The plant is closely related to other nightshades such as tomatoes and eggplants. The fruit is commonly found in markets in Colombia, Kenya, Bolivia, Peru, and Chile, but is less often exported due to its sensitivity to handling. Attempts to commercialize and export the fruit have been made in various countries. The plant is hardy and can grow at altitudes ranging from sea level to 10,000 feet, but performs best in a warm, frost-free climate. It is usually propagated by cuttings and can be grown in a similar manner to tomatoes. The fruit is primarily eaten fresh, but can also be used in fruit salads, smoothies, and desserts
