Solanum melissarum is a small tree or shrub that is native to Brazil and belongs to the Solanaceae family. It typically grows to be 1-6 meters tall and has a single trunk with light branches and simple, unlobed leaves. The flowers are long and narrow, with green-white petals that curve upward when they first open and become lax as they age. The anthers are initially purple but turn yellow-orange over time. This plant has a unique reproductive biology, with pendulous flowers that attract male Euglossa cordata bees with their fragrances. These bees help pollinate the flowers by pressing the thecae and releasing pollen through a bellows mechanism. It has been found that Solanum melissarum is self-incompatible, meaning it cannot self-pollinate.
