Solanum linnaeanum, also known as devil's apple or apple of Sodom, is a nightshade species native to several African countries. However, it has been introduced to other regions, including Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Asia, where it is considered an invasive species. The plant produces tomato-like fruits that are toxic when consumed. Attempts were made to use the plant's alkaloids as a cancer drug, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. There is confusion surrounding the plant's taxonomy, with several invalid names being attached to it. It is often confused with other nightshade species, such as Solanum cinereum and Solanum capsicoides. The original description of the plant by Carl Linnaeus has been discarded and a new taxon has been chosen in his honor. It is unclear if the plant described by other botanists as Solanum sodomeum is the same species.
