Solanum cardiophyllum, commonly known as cimatli, heartleaf horsenettle or heartleaf nightshade, is a North American species found primarily in Mexico. It is also present in some parts of the SW United States, but was likely introduced. This wild potato species is edible and was commonly eaten by the Aztec and Chichimeca. It is still eaten in some parts of Mexico today and was grown for market in Jalisco as recently as 2010. Plants can reach a little over two feet in height and have small tubers, reaching about an inch in diameter. The flavor of S. cardiophyllum is not easily distinguishable from domesticated potatoes and the level of glykoalkaloids in some accessions is very low. It is listed as an invasive weed in some parts of the US.
