Duboisia hopwoodii, also known as pituri or pitchuri thornapple, is a shrub found in the arid interior region of Australia. It typically grows to 1-3 meters in height and has long, narrow leaves. The plant produces white, bell-shaped flowers with violet-striped throats between June and November, followed by small purple-black berries. Like tobacco, it contains nicotine. Indigenous Australians use the dried leaves of this plant mixed with wood ash to create pituri, a traditional chewing mixture. Some populations of D. hopwoodii have high levels of nornicotine, which can be used to contaminate water holes and stun animals for hunting. The species was first described by botanist Ferdinand von Mueller in 1861 and later transferred to the genus Duboisia in 1876.
