Brunfelsia grandiflora, also known as royal purple brunfelsia, is a flowering shrub native to South America. It is part of the nightshade family and can grow up to 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide. The shrub has fragrant white or purple flowers that bloom almost year-round. In its native range, it is used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments and is also used as an ingredient in the hallucinogenic drink ayahuasca. Laboratory tests have shown that extracts from this plant can be effective against the protozoa that cause leishmaniasis. Brunfelsia grandiflora is also popular as an ornamental plant and is often used in landscape design.
