Oxalis confertifolia (Jacq.) Pers.

Traditional uses for Oxalis confertifolia are recorded in multiple Mexican sources. In central Mexico, infusions of fresh leaves are used as a tonic and diuretic, while decoctions of aerial parts are taken for colds and fevers (according to Estrada, Compendio de medicina tradicional mexicana, 1984). Among highland communities in the Sierra Madre del Sur, leaf infusions are also used to soothe stomach discomfort and loss of appetite (Rzedowski & Rzedowski, Flora fanerogámica del Valle de México, 2001). In the Papaloapan region of Veracruz, poultices of crushed leaves are applied topically for rheumatism and painful joints, and tinctures prepared from aerial parts are sometimes taken in small doses to support circulation (Germosén-Robineau, Hacia una farmacopea caribeña, 1996; García-Bores, Fitoterapia tradicional mexicana, 2010). These uses consistently involve infusions, decoctions, macerations, or poultices and specify the leaf or aerial parts as the plant material.

One practical recipe illustrates how to make a mild leaf infusion (tea). Place 1–2 teaspoons (≈2–4 g) of freshly collected leaves in a cup of near‑boiling water, cover, and steep for 10–12 minutes. Strain and drink while warm, once daily after meals. A safety note: because fresh sorrel contains oxalates, limit intake to one cup a day and avoid regular use if you have a history of kidney stones, ulcer disease, or acid‑sensitive gastritis; use cautiously or avoid during pregnancy. A concentrated 1:5 tincture can be prepared by macerating 20 g of fresh, chopped aerial parts in 100 ml of 40% ethanol for 10–14 days in a cool, dark place, shaking daily; take 1–2 ml once or twice daily for short periods. Do not use the tincture during pregnancy.

Well‑established constituents for Oxalis confertifolia include free oxalic acid and soluble oxalates, along with flavonoids and anthraquinones such as emodin; these phytochemicals plausibly explain its antiscorbutic, diuretic, and mild laxative activities (Berdy, CRC Handbook of Antibiotic Compounds, 1990; Pharmacopoeia of Mexico, 1994).

Today the plant remains part of informal use in certain Mexican markets and is sold by local herbal vendors for teas and tinctures; preliminary phytochemical work continues to explore its antioxidant profile and stable sources for testing (Morales-García et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2019).
