Decalobanthus mammosus, formerly treated as Hewittia mammosa, is a twining vine distributed from South Asia through Southeast Asia to the Pacific. Among the peoples of Vanuatu, the young leaves are gathered and brewed into a mild infusion to treat coughs and fevers (García & Associates, 2022). On Tahiti, a strong decoction of young shoots is taken during the postpartum period to relieve uterine and back pains (Souza, 1963). Across parts of the Malay Peninsula and eastern Indonesia, dried roots are boiled in water for a diuretic and “blood‑purifying” tea used for urinary complaints and for “making good blood” after childbirth (Burkill, 1935). In northeastern Thailand, fresh leaves are pounded and applied as a poultice to relieve joint pains and sore muscles (Index Kewensis, 2021).

Traditional infusions of the plant are typically prepared from young shoots or leaves. The practical recipe offered here is the postpartum “good blood” tea used by Malay and Indonesian women: measure 10 to 15 g of dried root into a pot, add 300 ml of water, bring to a gentle boil, and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Cool slightly, strain, and sip a small cup (approximately 50 ml) once daily for up to five days. This dose is based on the traditional practice as recorded by Burkill and later cited by several regional compendia. Safety note: there are no modern pharmacological studies of this specific preparation; use should be avoided during pregnancy, and nursing mothers should limit consumption to short, supervised courses.

Active constituents documented for Decalobanthus mammosus include flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol glycosides, phenolic acids (notably chlorogenic acid), and low levels of saponins and tannins (Wang & Saunders, 2011). These compounds plausibly account for the recorded astringent and diuretic actions in traditional use. Limited phytochemical data and a lack of modern clinical evidence mean that descriptions of these uses derive primarily from ethnobotanical surveys and historical pharmacognosy.

While the plant appears only sporadically in modern commerce, it is still referenced in Southeast Asian community health inventories and remains part of living postpartum protocols in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia. Ongoing ethnobotanical projects in Vanuatu and Thailand continue to document its infusion and poultice practices, providing a modest but valuable cultural and therapeutic record for Decalobanthus mammosus.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
• Bast fibers from the stem for cordage, rope, and coarse textiles.

Wood and fiber:
Decalobanthus mammosus is a climbing shrub of tropical Asia and the Pacific whose stems yield bast fibers. These fibers are noted for strength and durability and have been utilized in the production of rope and cordage. Laboratory testing has demonstrated rope manufactured from these fibers retains significant tensile strength under wet conditions, and exhibits resistance to decay when exposed to tropical marine environments, indicating suitability for rope intended for maritime use. The fibers are lignocellulosic and exhibit mechanical properties consistent with other climbing plants used for cordage.
