Saxifraga crustata, also known as crusted-leaved saxifraga, silver saxifrage, and encrusted saxifrage, is an evergreen perennial plant in the Saxifragaceae family. It was first described by Austrian botanist Lorenz Chrysanth von Vest in 1804. The genus name comes from the plant's ability to break rocks as it grows, while the species name refers to the shiny green leaves covered in crusty lime secreted from special pores on the leaf margins. This plant grows in dense mats and can reach up to 24 centimeters in height. It has narrow, linear leaves with a silver glow arranged in rosettes. The flowers are yellowish-white to cream white and bloom between June and August. Saxifraga crustata is found in the European Alps, specifically in Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, and Italy. It is commonly found in the Dolomites and Dinarides, and is classified as a chasmophyte species, growing on rocky surfaces.

Germination/Propagation Top
Suggest a correction or add new data!Expose seeds to natural outdoor winter conditions for 3 months, then gradually increase light and temperature in the spring. |
Sow seeds immediately as their viability decreases rapidly, or they best germinate when fresh. If stored, seeds might need temperature cycling and patience to germinate. |
