Aesculus flava, also known as the common buckeye, is a deciduous tree native to the Eastern United States. It can grow up to 154 feet tall and is commonly found in mesophytic forests and floodplains. The leaves are palmately compound with five or seven leaflets, and the flowers are yellow or yellow-green. The fruit is a smooth capsule containing 1-3 nut-like seeds, which are poisonous to humans but can be made edible through a leaching process. This tree is often cultivated for its attractive yellow flowers and good autumn color, and has been given the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is also a pollinator plant, attracting hummingbirds and bees. Native Americans used to consume the seeds after roasting and soaking them to remove the toxic element.
