Acer pycnanthum, also known as the Japanese red maple, is a species of maple tree native to Japan and introduced to Korea. It typically grows to be about 20 meters tall, but can reach up to 30 meters. This tree is commonly found in relict mountain wetlands and blooms in April before its leaves emerge. Despite being considered Vulnerable in its natural habitat, it is often used as a street tree and is the official tree of several Japanese municipalities and Aichi Prefecture. The tree is dioecious, with separate male and female flowers, and has grey bark with a shaggy appearance. Its leaves are shallowly lobed and turn yellow, orange, red, and purple in the autumn. It is similar to the smaller Acer rubrum. A. pycanthum is suitable for USDA hardiness zone 5 and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is hardy in all of the UK and northern Europe, but can be susceptible to aphids and verticillium wilt.
