Acer pseudosieboldianum, also known as the Chinese maple or purplebloom maple, is a deciduous tree native to northeastern China, Korea, and the Russian Far East. It grows about 12 to 18 inches per year and can reach a height of 15 to 25 feet. Its leaves are 4 to 6 inches wide with 9 to 11 lobes and turn vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange in the fall. This species is unique in that it exhibits Marcescence, meaning it holds onto its dried leaves through the winter. The Chinese maple is often used as an ornamental plant due to its cold tolerance and attractive flowers and fall foliage. However, it is susceptible to bark damage and diseases when stressed. It has also been hybridized with the Japanese maple to create a cold hardy tree with a mix of characteristics from both species.
