Acer nipponicum, also known as the Nippon maple, is a type of maple tree found in Japan. It is a medium-sized deciduous tree with smooth grey bark and dark green twigs. The flowers of this tree are mostly male, but some trees may have both male and female flowers. It grows in mountainous regions on the islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu at elevations between 500 to 2,000 meters. A study in 2006 placed A. nipponicum and A. caudatum at the base of the phylogenetic tree. It is believed to be closely related to two extinct species of Acer found in western North America. The species was first described in 1877 and has undergone several name changes before being officially named Acer nipponicum in 1938.
