Acer griseum, also known as the paperbark maple or blood-bark maple, is a deciduous tree native to central China. It can reach heights of 6-9 meters and has a smooth, shiny orange-red bark that peels in thin layers. The leaves are compound with three leaflets and have a dark green color on top and a bright blue-green color on the bottom. In the spring, the tree produces small yellow flowers and in the fall, it has spectacular foliage in shades of red, orange, and pink. This tree is often grown as an ornamental plant in temperate regions for its decorative bark and beautiful autumn colors. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit and has been the subject of seed collection expeditions to increase its genetic diversity. However, propagation of this tree can be difficult due to its parthenocarpic tendencies.

Germination/Propagation Top
Suggest a correction or add new data!Start at 4°C for 3 months, then warm to 20°C for another 3 months. |
Requires Scarification: Scarification involves physically breaking, scratching, or softening the seed coat to allow water absorption and germination to occur. This can be done by nicking the seed coat with a knife or rubbing the seeds between sheets of sandpaper. |
Requires Soaking: These seeds need to be soaked in warm water until they swell, which can take 24-48 hours. Seeds that float are usually not viable and should be discarded, along with the soaking water. |
5% germination, soak 3 weeks in water to remove outer seed coat or pry it off, then slice off small portion of inner seed coat with razor |
