Acer capillipes, also known as Kyushu maple or red snakebark maple, is a small deciduous tree native to Japan. It is part of the same taxonomic section as other snakebark maples and is typically found in mountainous regions near streams. The tree has a smooth olive-green bark with white stripes and small brown lenticels. Its leaves are 10-15 cm long with three or five lobes and turn bright yellow, orange, or red in the fall. The tree produces small greenish-yellow flowers in late spring and has distinctive samara nutlets. It is often grown as an ornamental tree for its unique bark and beautiful autumn foliage. It can be distinguished from its close relative, Acer rufinerve, by its reddish petioles and hairless or thinly hairy leaves. This plant has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
