Hippobromus pauciflorus, also known as false horsewood, is a small semi-deciduous tree found in South Africa. It grows on the edges of forests, stream banks, and in scrub forests. The tree is often used for hut-building due to its tall and slender saplings. Its leaves are paripinnate with 5 pairs of leaflets that vary in shape and have an unpleasant odor when bruised. The tree produces panicles of many flowers and small, black, and unpalatable fruits. The wood is described as heavy, hard, and strong, and is used for wagon-work and other purposes. It is also known for its scented resinous and oily substance. The tree is found along the east coast of South Africa and is one of the few trees on which the larva of the Swallow-tail butterfly will feed. Its name, Hippobromus, means "smelling of horse urine" in Greek, and its specific name, pauciflorus, means "few-flowered" in Latin. It belongs to the Sapindaceae family, which is closely related to the Rutaceae family and includes over 100 other genera.
