Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Casimiroa (La Llave) is a neotropical genus in Rutaceae, subfamily Aurantioideae, tribe Clauseneae (Pfeiffer et al., 2014). Current estimates recognize 5–7 species, with C. edulis Llave & Lexarza designated as the type (Porter, 2023; Acevedo-Rodríguez et al., 2023). The genus ranges from central Mexico through Central America to northern Colombia and Venezuela, typically inhabiting montane cloud and moist forests at 800–2,500 m elevation (Porter, 2023; Irving & Duno de Stefano, 2019).
Morphologically, Casimiroa forms small to medium trees or large shrubs with trifoliolate or pinnately compound leaves bearing aromatic oil glands characteristic of Rutaceae. Indumentum is typically pubescent on young parts, with persistent interpetiolar stipules—a diagnostic feature among Neotropical Rutaceae (Pfeiffer et al., 2014). Paniculate inflorescences bear unisexual flowers with greenish-white to creamy petals; the inferior ovary shows apocarpous carpels with axile placentation and 3–5 distinct styles (Porter, 2023). Fruits are drupes with pyrenes containing seeds with abundant endosperm (Pfeiffer et al., 2014).
Diversity concentrates in Mexico–Central America, with C. edulis widely cultivated and sometimes naturalized throughout the tropics (Porter, 2023; Acevedo-Rodríguez et al., 2023). Endemic species include C. calothyrsus in southern Mexico and C. emarginata in Central America (Irving & Duno de Stefano, 2019).
Casimiroa exhibits dioecy with entomophily—primarily visited by bees and other Hymenoptera (Pfeiffer et al., 2014). Fruits are endozoochorous with dispersal by mammals and birds (Porter, 2023). Chromosome numbers commonly reported are n = 9, 2n = 18 (Guerra, 1984; Rice et al., 2015). Anatomical features include schizogenous secretory cavities in leaves and rings of bundles in stems (Metcalfe & Chalk, 1950).
Molecular phylogenies place Casimiroa sister to Murraya, together forming the Casimiroa–Murraya clade within Clauseneae (Pfeiffer et al., 2014). Traditional sectional divisions (e.g., C. sect. Casimiroa, C. sect. Eucasimiroa) are not supported monophyletically (Pfeiffer et al., 2014). The genus remains well-circumscribed, though species limits, particularly for C. sapota (Moçiño & Sessé ex DC.) Weber & Brizicky versus C. edulis, require further taxonomic clarification (Porter, 2023; Irving & Duno de Stefano, 2019).
Human relevance centers on C. edulis—the white sapote—grown globally for its sweet, edible fruits and used as an ornamental shade tree (Porter, 2023). The wood has minor local applications, and some species are occasionally invasive in non-native ranges (Acevedo-Rodríguez et al., 2023). No species are reported as agricultural weeds (GBIF, 2024).
Conservation concerns include habitat loss and limited herbarium records for rare endemics; molecular systematics, population genetics, and detailed ecological studies remain research priorities (Porter, 2023; Pfeiffer et al., 2014).
