Turraeanthus (Meliaceae, tribe Swietenieae) comprises approximately two recognized species of small to medium-sized evergreen to semi-evergreen trees that occur in moist tropical forests from West to East and Central Africa. The type species is Turraeanthus africana (Penz.) Pellegr., widely cited in checklists and floras (POWO, 2024; FZ, 2024). The genus is distinguished within Meliaceae by a combination of axillary, usually paniculate inflorescences bearing numerous small, functionally unisexual flowers with valvate sepals, five free petals, and an ovary that is typically 3–5-locular with axile placentation. The fruits are loculicidal woody or leathery capsules that open into 3–5 valves, and the seeds are small and wingless, in contrast to the familiar winged seeds of many Mahogany relatives. Young twigs are often reddish and angulate, and the leaves are pinnate with numerous leaflets lacking domatia, features that help separate Turraeanthus from Swietenia and Khaya in regional treatments.

Species richness and distribution show a West African centre of diversity in the Gulf of Guinea forests and peripheral populations extending into Central and East Africa (AfriMali, 2018; GBIF, 2024; WCSP, 2024). Most collections derive from lowland rainforest below about 1000 m, with occasional records from swampy sites and forest margins. Local endemism is evident at the infraspecific level in the Guineo-Congolian block, whereas typical habitats comprise primary and secondary lowland rainforests. Biogeographic patterns emphasize the Guineo-Congolian centre of concentration and narrower distributions in surrounding lowland forest fragments.

Intrinsic biology remains sparsely documented. Fruits dehisce to expose numerous minute seeds that likely fall near the parent (FWTA, 1954). Pollination is unrecorded and probably entomophilous, as in most Meliaceae; nothing specific is reported for the genus. Chromosome numbers are not reliably reported for the genus in peer-reviewed or major floristic treatments, and no base number can be asserted at this time. Generative traits suggest adaptation to shaded understory to mid-canopy positions and possibly to disturbance, though quantitative demography is lacking.

Taxonomically, Turraeanthus is placed in tribe Swietenieae and historically allied to Swietenia, but molecular studies have highlighted repeated and extensive synonymization among mahogany-like taxa in Africa (Mabberley et al., 1995; Muellner et al., 2006). Broad treatments historically merged several African mahogany lineages (Khaya, Pseudocedrela, and Turraeanthus) or treated Pseudocedrela and Turraeanthus as congeneric, a view reflected in 19th–20th century checklists and African manuals. More recent floristic work, however, separates Turraeanthus from Pseudocedrela on capsule morphology and petal number and maintains a two-species circumscription (FZ, 2024; AfriMali, 2018). Alternative treatments in regional floras and earlier checklists that fuse Turraeanthus into Pseudocedrela or vice versa should be considered competing hypotheses until refined phylogenetic analyses explicitly sampling Turraeanthus are published (AfriMali, 2018; FZ, 2024).

Humans value the timber as light to medium hardwood, locally commercialized under trade names such as “African white mahogany.” It is used for interior joinery, furniture, and light construction, but the resource is not widely exported compared with Khaya, reflecting lower volumes and fragmented supply. The tree is occasionally encountered in horticulture in humid tropical gardens, where it is valued for shade and its neat canopy; there is no indication of invasiveness outside its native range.

Conservation concerns centre on habitat loss from deforestation, logging, and forest fragmentation; quantitative IUCN assessments for the species remain outstanding. There is a need for targeted phylogenomic sampling of Turraeanthus to clarify its relationships among mahogany relatives and to update species-level conservation assessments in a rapidly changing landscape (FZ, 2024; AfriMali, 2018).
