Melia volkensii (known in Maasai as “ol-dek” or “oldooki”) is valued in parts of Kenya and Tanzania for simple home preparations of the leaves. Among Maasai pastoralists of central and southern Kenya, fresh or dried leaf infusions are taken for cough and catarrhal complaints (Lwoga et al., 2010; Koch et al., 2005). In the eastern highlands of Kenya, the Kamba commonly prepare a leaf tea that is drunk for fever and also used as a wash for colds (Mbuya, 1994). On the Tanzanian steppe near the Rift, Chagga and Maasai herders prepare leaf decoctions for fever and chills (Engidawork, 2004). The bark is occasionally chewed or made into a weak decoction for stomach pain and parasitic complaints, particularly among Maasai of Kajiado District (Njoroge et al., 2003). These preparations rely on the bitter leaf, and to a lesser extent bark, which are noted in regional medicinal inventories (Beentje, 1994).

A simple cough tea is made by placing 10–15 g of fresh leaves (or 5–8 g of dried) into 250 ml of just‑boiled water, covering and infusing 10–15 minutes, then straining. One cup is taken up to three times daily for no more than 7–10 days. Because the leaves can be bitter and emetic, start with a smaller dose and stop if vomiting or severe stomach upset occurs. Use in pregnancy or for infants is not advised, and people with liver disease should avoid leaf preparations; if symptoms persist, consult a clinician.

The pharmacology of Melia volkensii reflects the well‑known limonoid profile of Meliaceae: meliantriol, melianone, and related azadirachtin‑type limonoids that are broadly antimicrobial and antiparasitic, with modest gastro‑irritant effects in some people. Tannins are also reported from the bark and contribute to astringency and antidiarrheal actions.

While limited, human studies are underway on limonoid‑rich extracts for parasitic infections and respiratory complaints, but robust clinical data remain sparse. Traditional teas and decoctions from leaves continue to be prepared in home practice in dryland Kenya and northern Tanzania, and small growers sell fresh or dried leaf bundles seasonally where the tree is common.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Sawn timber and poles; fuelwood and charcoal; viver crop components in agroforestry for soil conservation and shade.

Industrial and craft applications:
Not documented for primary fiber/pulp or composites. The species is occasionally used in light carpentry and general construction where timber is available; however, established commercial processing is not widely reported.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
None documented.

Colorants and tanning:
None documented.

Wood and fiber:
Timber is noted as moderately durable and used for flooring, furniture, joinery, beams, and posts, as well as for agricultural implements and vehicle bodies. Poles are used for posts, fencing, and building. The wood is valued as a fuel and for high-quality charcoal. Reported properties include medium to high density, good dimensional stability, favorable steam bending, and resistance to insect attack and dry-wood termites, supporting its suitability for structural and outdoor uses.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
None documented.

Properties relevant to use:
Density: 600–760 kg/m³ at 12% MC. Dimensional stability: low shrinkage and good steam-bending characteristics. Natural durability: moderate to high resistance to insects (including dry-wood termites) and fungal decay, reducing the need for preservative treatments in non-ground-contact applications. The combination of density and stability supports load-bearing components, while the natural resistance extends service life of exterior timber.

Standards and regulation:
Compliance with national timber grading rules and standard moisture-content measurement methods (e.g., kiln drying to ≤12% MC) is practiced. Export follows CITES; however, Melia volkensii is not currently listed in CITES Appendices.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Source material is generated primarily from on-farm agroforestry plantings in the Horn of Africa and East Africa, supporting rural livelihoods and soil conservation. Regeneration by seed is noted as straightforward; there is no significant record of plantation programs at scale or global trade volumes, suggesting low commercial pressure but limited certified supply.
