Among the Taita of Kenya, the leaves are bruised and applied as a poultice to swelling, and the bark is steeped with salt to make a wash for skin conditions like ringworm; Rukungäri et al., 1982 document these uses. In the Northeast Indian Hill Tribes (e.g., Khasi and Naga), the bark is taken as a decoction for dysentery and to control fevers, while leaves are crushed and used topically for ulcers; Longkumer and Jamir, 1999 record these practices. In Sri Lankan Traditional Medicine, the bark is also boiled to make a decoction for dropsy, according to Jayaweera, 1980–81, and various Ayurvedic and Siddha sources treat “Rohitaka” (the bark of Aphanamixis polystachya) as a general tonic for hepatic and pulmonary complaints; that usage often involves decoctions or medicated wines (e.g., rohitakarista, Charaka Samhita; Jain, 1968; Kapoor, 2001).

One practical bark decoction is to simmer approximately 30 g of air‑dried bark in 1 liter of water for 30 minutes, then steep off‑heat for another 10 minutes; the dose is usually 60–120 mL twice daily. As safety, use short courses, do not exceed the typical dose, and avoid during pregnancy due to traditional cautions and the bitter alkaloid profile (Kapoor, 2001; Jain, 1968).

Modern investigations have isolated limonoids such as rohitukin and mahogany lactones from the bark, as well as flavonoids and tannins; these constituents plausibly support the traditional bitter, diuretic and anti‑inflammatory activities (Kapoor, 2001; Jana and Ghosal, 1979). Today the species remains in trade as “Rohitaka” bark, is still used in ethnobotanical practice in parts of India and Sri Lanka, and is a focus of pharmacological screening for hepatoprotective effects (Kapoor, 2001; Jana and Ghosal, 1979; Rukungäri et al., 1982; Longkumer and Jamir, 1999; Jayaweera, 1980–81).

Wood and fiber:
The wood is used for furniture, cabinetry, joinery, and plywood. Reports list utilization in building components such as door and window frames, flooring, and boat planking. It is also employed for agricultural implements and turnery, and is considered a suitable pulpwood species for paper manufacture (e.g., kraft pulp). These applications imply a medium to heavy hardwood with workable density and grain, but documented hardness and durability data are not consistent across authoritative sources.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
The seeds yield an edible oil reported to be used for culinary frying and in processed foods as an ingredient. Oil composition has been characterized as a conventional seed oil with the presence of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids (predominantly linoleic and oleic acids); however, quantitative profiles (e.g., iodine/saponification values) and technical specifications are not uniformly reported.

Colorants and tanning:
Bark extracts provide natural brown dyes for textiles, historically documented for dyeing cotton; use on protein fibers (silk/wool) is not consistently supported in reliable literature. No verified tannin class or astringency profile is reported for leather tanning applications.

Industrial and craft applications:
Wood is used in furniture manufacture and light construction; bark extracts have been noted as dyestuffs in textile craft processes (e.g., calico printing). Seed oil is employed in cooking applications and as an ingredient in processed foods; non-food industrial uses are not well established.
