Psittacanthus cucullaris is a species of mistletoe that belongs to the Loranthaceae family. It is found in several countries in South America, including Costa Rica, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela, and Brazil. This hemiparasite has young upright stems and pendulous adult stems, with leathery leaves and inflorescences at the end of the branches. Its flowers have a pink or red dome and are surrounded by bracts. The fruits are ovoid and turn from green to black or purple when ripe. This plant is commonly found in the Amazon rainforest, the Central Brazilian savanna, and the Pantanal in Brazil. It was first described by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in 1792 and was later assigned to the genus Psittacanthus by George Don in 1834. The name Psittacanthus comes from the Greek words for "parrot" and "flower", possibly due to its bright colors. The species name, cucullaris, refers to the bracts that cover the inflorescence and fruit, giving them a "hooded" appearance.
