Prunus tangutica, also known as Chinese wild peach, is a species of plant native to China. It was previously thought to be a wild almond due to its fruit characteristics, but recent studies have shown that it is actually more closely related to the cultivated peach. Its closest relative is Prunus mongolica. This plant is a dense, spiny shrub or shrubby tree that can reach up to 4 meters in height. It grows best on sunny slopes and near streams at elevations between 1500 and 2600 meters, but can also be found at higher altitudes of up to 3400 meters. The flowers of this plant are pale pink and its fruit is green when unripe and purplish-red when ripe. The fruit's fleshy exterior splits open when ripe, which led to its misclassification as an almond for many years. However, in 1935, Kovalev and Kostina correctly assigned it to the genus Persica.
