Prunus serrulata, also known as Japanese cherry, is a species of cherry tree native to Japan, China, and Korea. It is also used to refer to a cultivar produced from Prunus speciosa, a cherry tree endemic to Japan. The Japanese have developed many cultivars of this tree through selective breeding, which are now used for ornamental purposes around the world. These cultivars, known as the Cerasus Sato-zakura Group, are classified differently in various countries due to genetic, morphological, and flowering time differences. Prunus serrulata is a small deciduous tree with a dense crown and produces white to pink flowers in clusters in the spring. Its fruit, called sakuranbo, is smaller and more bitter than other cherry varieties. Many popular cultivars, such as 'Kanzan' and 'Shirotae', are derived from complex interspecific hybrids with the Oshima cherry. These cultivars are widely grown for their large, double flowers and are popular for cherry blossom viewing.
