Prunus serrula, also known as birch bark cherry, is a species of cherry tree native to China. It is popular for its striking coppery-red bark and is often used as an ornamental tree in many parts of the world. The tree can reach a height of 20-30 feet and has simple, serrated leaves. Its bark is tough and resembles Mylar, and the tree produces small red fruit and clusters of flowers. Prunus serrula is easy to grow and does well in a variety of soil types and pH levels. It is not considered to be an invasive species as it is susceptible to common garden diseases and pests. The tree is sometimes grafted with Japanese cherry to create a tree with red bark and showier flowers. In 2012, the 'Branklyn' variety of Prunus serrula received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
