Malva sylvestris has a long history as a gentle demulent tea and wash across southern Europe and the Near East. In the Balkans, leaves and flowers are steeped as a soothing beverage for coughs and sore throats (Jarić et al., 2015). In traditional medicine of southern Italy, the same infusions are taken for gastrointestinal irritation and as a mild expectorant (De Feo & Senatore, 1993). Among practitioners in northern Morocco, leaves and aerial parts are decocted for throat complaints and skin irritation, and the same decoction is used topically as a wash (Alami et al., 2006). In Greece and surrounding islands, leaves are infused as a throat-soothing drink and the cooled infusion applied to irritated skin and minor wounds (Ghirardini et al., 2011). Traditional poultices of freshly bruised leaves are also reported in Morocco and Tunisia for burns, bruises, and inflammatory skin conditions (Nabli, 1999; Ghirardini et al., 2011).

A simple soothing tea can be made by steeping 2–3 g of dried leaves and/or flowers in 200–250 mL of freshly boiled water for 10–12 minutes; strain and drink 1–2 cups daily as needed for cough or dry throat. A mild extract suitable for throat gargles is prepared as an infusion: 3 g of herb in 200 mL hot water, infused 10 minutes and cooled to a comfortable temperature before use. For a 1:5 ethanol tincture (w/v), macerate 20 g of dried aerial parts in 100 mL of 45% ethanol for 2–3 weeks, shaking daily, then press and filter; a typical dose is 2–3 mL taken in water up to three times daily. Safety notes: Malva is generally well tolerated; however, allergies to Malvaceae are possible and bitter-scented hydrocyanic compounds are not present at levels of concern in the leaves. People with known sensitivity should discontinue use, and topical applications should be patch‑tested first. Traditional sources emphasize the herb’s very low toxicity, yet medicinal use during pregnancy or lactation should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

The demulent action of Malva sylvestris is attributed to its mucilaginous polysaccharides, which readily form soothing gels, along with flavonoids such as malvidin and quercetin derivatives and the anthocyanin delphinidin that contribute to antioxidant and mild anti‑inflammatory effects (Nabli, 1999; Gartner, 2015). These constituents help explain the traditional use of infusions and washes for irritation of the throat and skin.

Today, Malva sylvestris remains common in herbal commerce as dried leaf and flower tea and as a macerate for external use, and modern research continues to explore its anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in relation to the plant’s traditional indications (Alami et al., 2006).

Common products:
The mature fruits are eaten fresh and processed into jams, conserves, and dried fruit. They are also used as an ingredient in fermented alcoholic beverages, particularly in parts of Central and Eastern Europe where myrobalan plums are distilled into plum brandies (e.g., slivovitz). A concentrated juice or syrup is produced for flavoring.

Industrial and craft applications:
Wood from mature trees is occasionally employed in small-scale woodworking, such as turned objects, tool handles, and brush backs. The wood is fine-grained, moderately hard, and takes a smooth finish. The species is widely used as a rootstock for other Prunus species in horticulture and orchard production, particularly to impart vigor or adaptation to certain soils. In landscaping, selected ornamental forms (pink- to purple-leaved cultivars) are planted as street, park, and garden trees.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Fruit products include fresh table fruit; jam, preserves, and syrups; dried plums; and fermented beverages, including brandies made from distilled fruit mash or infusion. Processing commonly involves sugar addition, heat treatment, and controlled fermentation or distillation. Total soluble solids are typically moderate to high, with low titratable acidity, supporting sweet-tart profiles and product stability. Dried products are shelf-stable after controlled drying.

Colorants and tanning:
The fruit skins are a minor natural colorant source. Historical references describe myrobalan plums providing brown to yellowish-brown hues when used as a dye for protein fibers, but commercial use today is minor and primarily craft or local dyeing. The bark and unripe fruit contain tannins that can serve in traditional tanning systems for light leathers; industrial application is limited.

Wood and fiber:
Wood is not a timber commodity but can be used for craft and tool components where a fine, moderately dense wood is desired. Fiber and bark content are sufficient for small-scale or experimental applications, but no significant industrial fiber or pulp use is documented.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Fruity fragrance notes are occasionally explored in flavor and fragrance formulation, particularly as natural derivatives in niche or regional contexts; such use is not mainstream.

Properties relevant to use:
Fruits contain anthocyanins and other phenolics that contribute to coloration and browning resistance in processed products, and moderate acidity aids microbiological stability. Wood properties include fine, interlocked grain; medium density; and good finishing characteristics.

Standards and regulation:
Food uses are subject to general food safety and labeling regimes (e.g., EU Regulation No. 1169/2011 on food information to consumers; U.S. 21 CFR). Liqueur/alcohol production must comply with national beverage alcohol regulations and labeling standards.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Prunus cerasifera is widely cultivated and also occurs in feral or naturalized populations in parts of Europe, Asia, and introduced regions. Sustainable harvesting for wild fruit should aim to avoid impacts on regeneration. In some jurisdictions it can become invasive or naturalized, and control programs exist where appropriate. For commercial scale, the risk of naturalization and spread should be considered in sourcing decisions.
