Prunus angustifolia, also known as Chickasaw plum, is a North American species of plum-bearing tree that was originally cultivated by Native Americans. Its narrow leaves give it its species name, and it was recently named the official state fruit of Kansas. This tree grows up to 20 feet tall and produces small white flowers and tart red plums in late summer. It thrives in sandy or loose soil with low to medium water levels and can be found in many areas across the eastern and central United States. Chickasaw plum is used as a larval host for various species and its fruit is eaten by animals. It is also popular in ornamental horticulture and can be found growing wild along highways. The edible fruits can be eaten raw or made into jellies, and the tree is also used for bonsai because of its attractive features.
