Prunus americana, also known as the American plum, is a species of Prunus native to North America. It is commonly planted outside of its native range and has been confused with the Canada plum. This tree grows as a large shrub or small tree and is adapted to coarse and medium-textured soils. It blooms in spring and produces small, round fruits in the summer. American plum is often used for ornamental and culinary purposes, with over 200 cultivated varieties. It is also used for windbreaks and stabilizing stream banks. Native Americans traditionally used this tree for food and dye, and it is mentioned in Laura Ingalls Wilder's book "On the Banks of Plum Creek".
