The wood of the western mayhaw is also used for making tool handles and fence posts.

Crataegus opaca, also known as the western mayhaw, is a small tree or shrub found in the southern United States. It has a tall, narrow trunk and spiny branches, with oval dark green leaves and clusters of pink or white flowers. Its fruits, called mayhaws, are large and have a cranberry-red color when ripe. This species prefers wet and acidic soils and can be found in low woods, creeks, and river bottoms. Its fruits are commonly used to make jams, preserves, and jellies, and the wood is used for making tool handles and fence posts. The western mayhaw is native to Alabama, Texas, and Arkansas and blooms from February to March, with fruit ripening in May to June.
