It is native to Japan, Korea, and China, and is widely cultivated in Japan as an ornamental tree. The tree grows to a height of 10-15 meters and has a rounded crown. The leaves are simple, alternate, and obovate in shape. The flowers are white and have five petals. The fruit is a pome, about 1 cm in diameter, with a single seed. The fruit is edible and is used in traditional medicine.
